Common Materials Used in Prototype Model Making?

Prototype models, also known as mock-ups, are essential for newly developed or planned products. They serve as the first step in verifying a product's feasibility and allow for targeted improvements to address defects. A prototype is an indirect and effective method for identifying flaws, shortcomings, and potential hazards in the design until no defects can be found in a single prototype sample. At this point, a small-scale trial production is usually conducted to identify and improve any issues that may arise during mass production.

Based on the manufacturing materials, prototype models can be classified into plastic prototypes, metal prototypes, silicone prototypes, and clay prototypes. Common materials for plastic prototypes include ABS, PC, PMMA, and PU. ABS is commonly used for creating manual models; PC and PMMA are used for manufacturing transparent parts; and PU is used for producing silicone molds for small batch production.

ABS is a material with a block structure and lower density than injection-molded ABS. During processing, the outer molecular chains are cut and broken, resulting in lower strength and a greater susceptibility to cracking. Therefore, ABS prototype models cannot be used as final products for sale.

The process of creating prototype models involves CNC (computer numerical control) machining and silicone molding techniques. The tools used are similar to those in standard machining, with the difference being that prototype model milling materials include ABS, PC, PMMA, and other materials. CNC machining software is used to program the 3D data. This process results in semi-finished products, also known as rapid laser prototyping and manufacturing. However, due to poor precision and appearance quality, laser rapid prototyping is not recommended.

After CNC machining and milling, the semi-finished products undergo polishing, painting, and electroplating to complete the process. The final prototypes can closely match the official product. This is an excellent method for demonstrating and verifying the appearance and functionality of prototype models.
